CHEROKEE COUNTY REPUBLICAN PARTY URGES HOUSE SPEAKER DADE PHELAN TO RESIGN

PRESS RELEASE May 26, 2023

Cherokee County, Texas

Jacksonville, TX – On Tuesday, the Cherokee County Republican Party passed a Resolution urging Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan to resign immediately for abuse of power in awarding nine House Committee chairmanships to democrats in February.

The resolution notes each appointment was made in defiance of over eighty percent of Texas Republican Primary voters, who mandated the majority-Republican Texas Legislature end the practice of awarding committee chair positions to Democrats.

The resolution shows the majority-Republican House of Representatives Speaker Dade Phelan received notice of this Republican voter mandate on at least three separate occasions between June of last year and the beginning of the current legislative session in January.

The nine individual Democrat committee chair appointments by Speaker Phelan are nine separate violations of Texas Republican Party Legislative Priority number five, “Ban Democrat Chairs”.

Also cited in the resolution are multiple violations of Texas Republican Party core principles by Speaker Phelan, resulting from his multiple appointments of Democrat Party representatives to Texas House committee chair positions.

The Cherokee County Republican Party resolved to prepare and transmit an official copy to the State Party Chairman and requests the State Republican Executive Committee and delegates to the next State Convention concur in the resolution.
